Walking towards change
In 2022, Michael passed away at age 50, just two years after a bowel cancer diagnosis. Determined that his death would lead to something meaningful, his family launched March for Mick, an annual fundraiser challenging participants to walk 50 kilometers – one for each year of Michael’s life – to support bowel cancer research at Garvan.
“Part of my grief is anger – anger at how much he suffered. I wanted to channel that into something positive” says Michael’s wife, Linda. “It’s about community, it’s about encouraging people to take their health seriously, and it’s about keeping Michael’s memory alive.”
